Miss Su-yin Koay is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in vision correction, cornea and external diseases and emergency ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Moorfields Private Hospital. She also serves as the lead for corneal infections. She has a strong commitment to driving positive change and is a dedicated educator who aims to foster a culture of continuous learning.
Patients choose to see me for my commitment to their wellbeing and for prioritising customised care. I consistently provide honest advice, set realistic expectations, and take the necessary time to ensure my patients comprehend their eye condition fully.
Working at a centre of excellence such as Moorfields allows me to integrate the latest technology with my expertise to offer tailored treatments aligned with each patient’s unique needs. My approach guarantees that patients receive the highest standard of care, emphasising a patient-centered and individualised experience.
My research projects are largely focused on two themes: corneal infections and leadership and quality improvement in ophthalmology. I am excited about an upcoming research study on the use of steroid eye drops in acanthamoeba keratitis (a type of corneal infection). We are in the early stages of setting this up, and Moorfields will be the only site in the UK taking part in this international clinical study.
As an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, I support the management of anterior segment pathologies through teaching and lecturing on various revision courses. I have a particular interest in upskilling optometrists, GPs and medical doctors to improve the management of anterior segment eye problems in the community.
