Mr Badrul Hussain is the Clinical lead for the Rapid Access and Urgent Care Clinic at Moorfields Private. Here is a short interview with Mr Hussain to introduce him to optometrists and primary care practitioners like yourselves.
As a consultant working in Emergency Ophthalmology, I see patients with a broad spectrum of eye conditions. I have had subspecialty Fellowship training in Adnexal (Oculoplastic, Lacrimal and Orbital), Emergency Ophthalmology and Cataract Surgery, but my main focus is currently on Emergency Ophthalmology and Cataract Surgery.
Patients come to us with a wide range of conditions across most of ophthalmology including those with red, sore eyes, contact lens issues, eye injuries, visual changes and people whom opticians have requested further assessment by an ophthalmologist. Patients with diagnosed retinal detachments/tears and double vision/diplopia are best managed by subspecialists via the Emergency department and we are unable to see these patients in the Rapid Access and Urgent Care Clinic.
I hope they come because they wish to receive a comprehensive ophthalmic examination and an expert opinion about their eye health. Being seen privately allows patients to be seen at a time that best suits them. I would like to think both my NHS and private patients regard me as someone who listens to their concerns and advises them on the most appropriate treatment strategies in a warm and compassionate manner.
Moorfields is one of the largest centres of ophthalmic research. I am currently completing a project on a new intraocular lens used during cataract surgery - further research projects on cataract and lens technology are currently in development. Just as my ophthalmic interests are broad, my publications in the medical literature encompass a variety of ophthalmic topics and interests.
At Moorfields, all consultants teach and train junior doctors and Allied Health Professionals who work alongside them. As well as being Deputy Director of the Cataract Service, I am also the Training Director overseeing the education of one of the largest cohort of cataract surgery trainees. I teach Cataract Surgery and Emergency Ophthalmology both locally and nationally, I am also a lecturer on MSc courses for University College, London. I have also provided eye health awareness messages on various media channels (radio, TV and press).
