Mr Ranjan Rajendram is a a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in cataract treatment and medical retina conditions at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Moorfields Private Hospital.
He is an honorary clinical associate professor at University College London (UCL), Institute of Ophthalmology and a clinical lecturer at Moorfields Eye Hospital Biomedical Research Centre of Ophthalmology, National Institute for Health Research.
I specialise in treating diseases of the retina including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular, oedema diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and eye flashes and floaters.
I also specialise in cataract surgery. Retinal diseases can co-exist with cataracts, and cataract surgery in medical retina patients requires special attention and care to reduce the risk of complications. My extensive clinical experience in general ophthalmology, medical retina diseases and all aspects of cataract surgery enable me to offer bespoke advice and treatment plans to patients with such multiple ophthalmic comorbidities.
I think my patients appreciate the clarity of my advice. I take time to explain their condition to them, respond to their concerns and answer their questions. A lot of my patients come to me having done some preliminary online research about available treatment options, and I would clearly and respectfully guide them towards the safest and most effective treatment plan for them based on the latest clinical research that I closely follow and contribute to.
I also see patients with other complex conditions, patients with learning disabilities who may find clinical environment especially challenging. I and my clinical team ensure that these patients and their carers are comfortable in consultation and provide enhanced sedation during the surgery as needed.
My research work is focused on advancements in retinal imaging including optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging method and an in-depth look at mechanisms of retinal diseases such as the role of neuroglobin in the retina.
I am speaking at the 100% Ophthalmology 2025 event about the critical role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and ultra-widefield imaging in the pre- and post-operative management of cataract surgery.
