Cataract Service at Moorfields at St Ann’s Hospital

Moorfields at St Ann’s Hospital provides a comprehensive cataract service in a modern, efficient, and patient-centred environment. We care for patients with a wide range of cataract conditions and aim to deliver timely, high-quality Moorfields care close to home.

Our experienced Moorfields cataract teams diagnose and manage both routine and complex cataract cases, offering access to advanced investigations and evidence-based surgical treatment. The service works closely alongside Glaucoma and Medical Retina pathways at St Ann’s Hospital to ensure coordinated and streamlined care where appropriate.

Why choose our cataract clinic

  • We have a one stop cataract clinic, where pre-operative tests, consultation, and pre-assessment are done during the same appointment, so that you can be given your operation date on the same day.
  • A streamlined, efficient cataract surgery pathway. Waiting times are usually within 4 weeks of your original referral.

  • Two theatres accredited as an elective surgical hub, conveniently located in one building on the St Ann’s Hospital site in Tottenham.

Conditions We Treat

  • Age-related cataract
  • Cataract associated with retinal or glaucoma disease
  • Diabetic cataract
  • Steroid-related cataract
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract
  • Dense or advanced cataracts requiring alternative surgical approaches
  • Aphakia or cataract-related complications requiring secondary lens implantation

Examinations, Tests and Treatments Offered

Cataract Assessment

  • Visual acuity testing and refraction
  • Slit lamp examination
  • Dilated fundus assessment
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) where clinically indicated
  • Biometry measurements for intraocular lens planning

Pre-operative Planning

  • Individualised surgical assessment and consent
  • Intraocular lens planning based on clinical need
  • Coordination with Glaucoma and Medical Retina teams where appropriate

Surgical Procedures We Offer

Standard Cataract Surgery

  • Phacoemulsification cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation

Complex Cataract Surgery

For selected patients with very dense or advanced cataracts that are not amenable to standard phacoemulsification, Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) may be offered. MSICS is undertaken by suitably trained Moorfields cataract surgeons at St Ann’s Hospital and forms part of the specialist pathway for managing challenging cataracts where an alternative surgical approach is clinically appropriate.

Secondary Intraocular Lens Procedures

For patients with cataract-related complications, including aphakia, the service provides secondary intraocular lens implantation following specialist assessment. More complex vitreoretinal lens procedures are delivered through separate Moorfields subspecialty pathways where required.

Surgery is typically carried out:

  • Under local anaesthetic
  • With sedation available if clinically required
  • With anaesthetic support available on site

Integrated Cataract Care

A key strength of the service at St Ann’s Hospital is its close collaboration with Glaucoma and Medical Retina teams.

  • Assessment and treatment can be coordinated to minimise hospital visits
  • Cataract surgery can be planned alongside ongoing retinal or glaucoma care
  • Patients requiring subspecialty procedures are directed to the appropriate Moorfields service
