Glaucoma Service at Moorfields at St Ann’s Hospital

Research shows that living with glaucoma is about more than eye pressure or test results; it is about protecting your vision, independence and quality of life, while also managing the effects of treatment on your day-to-day routine. Studies exploring what matters most to people with glaucoma found patients often prioritise keeping their sight, staying independent and having treatments that are simple and reliable, with fewer changes over time.

This means glaucoma care focuses not only on slowing or preventing sight loss, but also on supporting how you live and feel. Glaucoma itself and its treatments can affect daily activities, emotional wellbeing and confidence, which is why modern care aims to balance protecting vision with reducing treatment burden and side effects wherever possible.

Glaucoma is usually a long-term condition, and many people do not notice symptoms early on, however with regular monitoring, treatment and support, most people can continue to live full and independent lives. Treatment is usually designed to lower eye pressure using drops, laser or surgery if needed, with the aim of protecting vision for the long term.

Your glaucoma care team at St Ann's Hospital will work with you to choose treatments that suit your clinical needs and your lifestyle, because your experience and priorities are an important part of your care.

Site information

Our eye care unit is on ground level with no stairs, making it easily accessible for our patients.

There are two operating theatres, and all surgeries are performed under local anesthetic. Sedation is available if required and an anesthetist is always on-site during surgery.

A cataract consultant is always present and experienced ophthalmic trained nurses are also always present on site. The same Moorfields cataract expertise is provided at St Anns, as at the main site in City Road.

The discharge process is streamlined to avoid unnecessary delays.
